Top Pests in Winston-Salem
From bed bugs to the most common species of cockroaches, here are the pests you’ll want to look out for when living here Winston-Salem.
Bed bugs are a rising problem throughout the U.S., especially in many states along the eastern seaboard. North Carolina is recognized as one of the states with the highest bed bug rates and as such, homeowners and business owners in cities throughout our state should be prepared for how to deal with these nasty pests.
What Are Bed Bugs?
Bed bugs are one of the most unsettling pests to have in your home for the simple fact that they feed on the blood of humans and animals to survive. These nocturnal feeders are dark brown in color but will appear reddish-brown after feeding. Adult bed bugs generally grow to about a quarter of an inch long. Because of the combination of being nocturnal feeders and small in size — only about the size of an apple seed — it can be hard to know when you have a bed bug problem right away.
Where Do Bed Bugs Hide?
Bed bugs prefer to stay hidden away during the day in the dark reaches of homes. That being said, they do tend to stay near their food source. In other words, you, your family, and your pets, which is why they are typically found in bedding, the headboards of beds, mattress creases, along baseboards, in drawers and closets, and in the creases of upholstered furniture.
How Do I Identify Bed Bugs?
If you notice flat, oval-shaped, reddish-brown bugs scurrying into hiding places at night, these are probably bed bugs. If you notice bites on your skin on areas often exposed while sleeping, these may be bed bug bites. Bed bug bites often appear in clusters or in a line on the arms, legs, neck, chest, or abdomen. If you notice these, search your bed for other signs of bed bugs, which may include: cast shells, remnants of digested blood, and droppings.
How Can I Prevent a Bed Bug Infestation?
Awareness is one of the best defenses against bed bugs. Being aware of bed bug infestations in and around your area, in places where you’re traveling, and in public places such as hotels, motels, theaters, and schools can help you protect yourself from carrying one of these hitchhiking bugs home with you. If have bed bugs, call Ray Pest Control to eliminate your bed bug problem immediately.
There are four main types of cockroaches found in North Carolina: German cockroaches (small roaches), American, Oriental, and Smoky Brown cockroaches (all three are the largest species of roaches in the U.S.). All four species share some common characteristics in their general long, oblong shape, their color that ranges from light brown to dark brown, and their preference for warm, damp environments. The most common species is the German roach, characterized as a domestic roach species. The other three may be more of a nuisance pest, finding their way into homes and buildings occasionally when temperatures drop, or found lingering on exterior surfaces of your home.
German cockroaches are light brown and small. They typically grow to at most about five-eighths of an inch long. German cockroaches definitely cause the biggest problems in homes and businesses in Winston-Salem. In general, you’ll find them in kitchens and bathrooms near sinks, plumbing features, and appliances. Like bed bugs, German roaches are active at night and stay hidden during the day. German cockroaches grow in population rapidly, which is why they are such a problem here.
American cockroaches, also known as Palmetto bugs or Flying Water Bugs are the largest roach species in our state, growing to about 1½ inch in length. These pests are attracted to sweets, soaps, and grains, and are often found in the foundation of homes and businesses, near bodies of water such as pools, and under piles of wood.
These roaches are slightly smaller than American roaches reaching lengths of up to 1 ¼ inch. Oriental roaches are often referred to as waterbugs, as they prefer to be around water in dark, damp, cool areas such as sewers, plumbing fixtures, and other unsavory locations. They are most often found outdoors, but will make their way into homes and buildings during the colder months. Because of their preferred habitat, Oriental roaches are pretty nasty in that they feed on a wide range of filth and waste.
Smoky Brown Cockroaches
Smokey Browns are quite similar to that of the American roach in size and color. These roaches are less of a nuisance inside homes and are typically found on roofs, in shingles, in gutters, and living in piles of wood. Smoky Browns feed on both plant matter and decaying matter.
